E*TRADE account security: two-factor authentication, security tokens, transfer lock and guarantee
Checked
Quick answers
- Does E*TRADE have two-factor authentication? Yes. E*TRADE says to "Download the free VIP Access app for added security via two-factor authentication. You'll get a unique six-digit code to enter each time you log on" (E*TRADE: Security ID, checked Oct 22, 2026).
- Does E*TRADE still offer a security token? E*TRADE's Security ID page doesn't say directly. Its instructions cover only the VIP Access app. Key-ring tokens appear only in the page's fine print, which says "Security ID key-rings will be provided at no cost to qualified customers who maintain a combined balance of $50,000 or more in linked E*TRADE brokerage and Morgan Stanley Private Bank, National Association accounts or execute 30 or more stock or options trades per quarter," that "Delivery of Security ID key-rings is subject to product availability," and that Morgan Stanley "may impose a fee for this service in the future or may discontinue the service." The page doesn't say how to order a key-ring (E*TRADE: Security ID, checked Oct 22, 2026).
- Does E*TRADE have passkeys? Not documented. We did not find passkey sign-in on E*TRADE's public Security Center or Security ID pages (E*TRADE: Security Center, checked Oct 22, 2026).
- Does E*TRADE have a money transfer lock? Not documented. We did not find a self-service lock on transfers out of your account on E*TRADE's public Security Center (E*TRADE: Security Center, checked Oct 22, 2026).
- What is E*TRADE's Customer Protection Guarantee? E*TRADE calls it "our pledge to protect E*TRADE clients from losses due to unauthorized activity that takes place in your Self-Directed Account(s) through no fault of your own." It "only extends to your E*TRADE Self-Directed brokerage Account(s) and Morgan Stanley Private Bank, National Association deposit accounts," and does not cover "any full service brokerage accounts, insurance accounts, annuities, 529 plans and digital asset accounts." To be covered, you must keep your login details and account information confidential, notify E*TRADE immediately if you suspect unauthorized activity or a compromise, review your account statements and transaction confirmations "immediately on receipt," and you may be asked to cooperate with its investigation (E*TRADE: Security Center, checked Oct 22, 2026).
All eight protections we track
| Protection | Status | What E*TRADE's docs say | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Passkeys | Not documented | We did not find passkey sign-in. | Security Center |
| Authenticator app or app approval | Offered | You can use six-digit codes from the free VIP Access app. We did not find an E*TRADE app approval or support for other authenticator apps. | Security ID |
| Hardware security key | Not documented | We did not find FIDO or passkey security keys. E*TRADE's key-ring token shows a code, so we list it in the next row. | Security ID |
| Code-generating key fob | Offered | The Security ID page's disclosure mentions Security ID key-rings, free to qualified customers and "subject to product availability." It says "A $25 charge may be imposed for each additional or replacement Security ID key-rings." The page's setup steps cover only the VIP Access app. | Security ID |
| Text message the only option? | Not offered | E*TRADE documents six-digit codes from the VIP Access app, and its Security ID page also mentions key-ring tokens in its disclosure. | Security ID |
| Transfer lock | Not documented | We did not find a self-service lock on outgoing transfers. | Security Center |
| Phone PIN or verbal password | Not documented | We did not find a phone PIN or verbal password. | Security Center |
| Written fraud guarantee | Offered | The Customer Protection Guarantee covers losses from unauthorized activity in Self-Directed accounts through no fault of your own, if you meet its conditions. E*TRADE says it will investigate each claim and "may restore applicable losses." It may not apply if you share your login details or authorize third-party access, other than Morgan Stanley affiliates or "Aggregation Services through Total Wealth View." | Security Center |
How to turn it on
We list a step only where E*TRADE's own page gives it (checked Oct 22, 2026).
- VIP Access app, from E*TRADE: Security ID:
- Download the free VIP Access mobile app to your device.
- When you open it, it gives you a unique credential ID and six-digit security code.
- Follow the prompts to link the app to your E*TRADE account.
- The next time you log on, enter your E*TRADE user ID and password.
- Check the box next to "Use security code."
- Enter the six-digit code from your VIP Access app in the Security code field.
- Click "Log on."
- Key-ring token: the Security ID page doesn't explain how to order one.
- E*TRADE's "Review your security settings" link goes to its login page, so we could not confirm the steps inside your security settings (checked Oct 22, 2026).
What the statuses mean
- Offered: E*TRADE's own documentation describes the feature.
- Not offered: E*TRADE's documentation says it isn't available, or lists its options in a way that clearly leaves it out. For "Text message the only option?", Not offered means E*TRADE documents at least one alternative to text messages.
- Not documented: we could not find the feature in E*TRADE's public materials. It may still exist.
Features change, so check with E*TRADE before relying on any detail. This page is general education, not financial advice.
