Robinhood account security: passkeys, two-factor authentication, transfer lock and guarantee
Checked
Quick answers
- Does Robinhood have passkeys? Yes, in the Robinhood app on iOS. Robinhood says "Passkeys by Apple allow you to sign in to Robinhood from all your Apple devices without using a password." It also says "Passkeys are available for iOS only. You'll need to be using iOS 16 or later and the latest version of the Robinhood app to use passkeys" (Robinhood: Passkeys, checked Oct 22, 2026).
- Does Robinhood have two-factor authentication? Yes. Robinhood says "Two-factor authentication (2FA) helps protect your Robinhood account by requiring 2 sources of verification to sign in." It says you'll get a request for another form of verification, "such as" a device approval request, an "SMS one-time-code," bank verification, "A three-point selfie" or "A photo of the front and back of a valid government ID." The page doesn't say how Robinhood chooses which method to ask for, but it says that if you can't receive the SMS code, you can "select I need help" and "verify using a different method" (Robinhood: Verify it's you, checked Oct 22, 2026).
- Does Robinhood support Google Authenticator? Not documented for third-party apps. Robinhood documents device approvals in its own app, and its current US sign-in help doesn't list Google Authenticator or other authenticator apps (Robinhood: Verify it's you, checked Oct 22, 2026). One crypto transfer article tells you to "Enter your one-time code from your authenticator app" but doesn't name an app or say how to set one up (Robinhood: Send, receive, and swap crypto, checked Oct 22, 2026).
- Does Robinhood have a money transfer lock? Not documented. We did not find a lock you can turn on yourself for transfers out of your account in Robinhood's US help articles (Robinhood: Security best practices, checked Oct 22, 2026). Robinhood does offer an emergency account freeze that you request from Robinhood Support. Robinhood says "Freezing will restrict all movement in and out of your account," until "an investigation is complete (this could take several weeks)," and "You can still sell assets you own or close any positions you already hold." We don't count it, because it starts with Robinhood Support and an investigation, not a setting you control (Robinhood: I can't log in, checked Oct 22, 2026).
- What is Robinhood's security guarantee? Robinhood says "If eligible, we'll reimburse direct losses due to unauthorized activity." Its conditions include that you keep your account details and login credentials private, keep your devices secure, not give anyone remote access to your device or account, not call Robinhood phone numbers found through an internet search, not open suspicious links, be careful who you send money or crypto to, not use rooted devices or unofficial versions of the app, and contact Robinhood Support immediately if you lose a device or see activity you don't recognize. It says "We require your active cooperation during any review." Robinhood also says "Robinhood won't reimburse customers when their actions facilitated or enabled unauthorized account activity," and that if you give someone your login credentials, "any resulting activity on your account may be considered authorized by you." It says "A reimbursement can include cash, assets held through Robinhood Financial, and crypto held through Robinhood Crypto," and "Robinhood doesn't restrict any rights or protections under Regulation E for eligible transactions" (Robinhood: Security guarantee, checked Oct 22, 2026).
All eight protections we track
| Protection | Status | What Robinhood's docs say | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Passkeys | Offered | Passkeys work in the Robinhood app on iOS 16 or later. Robinhood says "Passkeys are available for iOS only." | Passkeys |
| Authenticator app or app approval | Offered | Device approvals send a notification to your mobile devices when you log in on a new device or update your account information, and "You can either approve the notification to complete the action, or deny it to block the action and secure your account instantly." Robinhood says these notifications "only go to a trusted Robinhood device." We did not find support for third-party authenticator apps. | Device approvals |
| Hardware security key | Not documented | We did not find FIDO or passkey security keys in Robinhood's US help articles. | Verify it's you |
| Code-generating key fob | Not documented | We did not find a physical token that shows a code. | Verify it's you |
| Text message the only option? | Not offered | Robinhood lists an "SMS one-time-code" alongside a device approval request, bank verification, a selfie and an ID photo. It also documents passkeys on iOS. | Verify it's you; Passkeys |
| Transfer lock | Not documented | We did not find a self-service lock on outgoing transfers. Robinhood documents an emergency account freeze that you request through Robinhood Support, which we don't count here. | Security best practices; I can't log in |
| Phone PIN or verbal password | Not documented | We did not find a phone PIN or verbal password for calls with Robinhood. Robinhood's SIM swap advice is to set up "a PIN or password" with your phone carrier, which is a carrier setting, not a Robinhood one. | Security best practices |
| Written fraud guarantee | Offered | Robinhood will reimburse direct losses due to unauthorized activity, if you are eligible and meet its conditions. | Security guarantee |
How to turn it on
We list a step only where Robinhood's own page gives it (checked Oct 22, 2026).
- Passkey, from Robinhood: Passkeys. In the Robinhood app:
- Select Account (the person icon), then Menu (3 bars).
- Select Security and privacy, then Create passkey.
- Select Continue.
- Verify your identity through Face or Touch ID.
Robinhood says "If there is a passkey in your iCloud keychain, you'll automatically be prompted to sign in with it when you open the Robinhood app."
- Device approvals: Robinhood says "We automatically secure all Robinhood accounts with trusted devices" (Robinhood: Trusted devices). If approvals aren't arriving, Robinhood says to make sure notifications are enabled "by going to your device's settings and toggling on notifications from Robinhood" (Robinhood: Device approvals).
- Review the devices on your account, from Robinhood: Security best practices:
- Select Account (the person icon), then Menu (3 bars) or Settings.
- Select Security and privacy, then Devices to view them.
Robinhood recommends "regularly reviewing the listed devices and removing any you don't recognize or no longer use."
- Emergency account freeze (not counted as a transfer lock), from Robinhood: I can't log in. Email [email protected]. Then, in the email from Robinhood's team:
- Select Freeze account.
- Confirm and select Yes, freeze my account.
Robinhood says "We'll contact you within 4 business days for follow-up questions and status updates."
- Passkeys on Android or the website: Robinhood's passkey page says passkeys are for iOS only, so there are no steps for other devices.
- Transfer lock and phone PIN: we did not find either in Robinhood's US help articles, so there are no steps to list.
What the statuses mean
- Offered: Robinhood's own documentation describes the feature.
- Not offered: Robinhood's documentation says it isn't available, or lists its options in a way that clearly leaves it out. For "Text message the only option?", Not offered means Robinhood documents at least one alternative to text messages.
- Not documented: we could not find the feature in Robinhood's public materials. It may still exist.
Features change, so check with Robinhood before relying on any detail. This page is general education, not financial advice.
