Schwab account security: passkeys, security keys, transfer lock and guarantee
Checked
Quick answers
- Does Schwab support passkeys? Yes. Schwab's passkey page gives setup steps, starting with "Select Set Up a Passkey on the login page." It also says you can register more than one passkey (Schwab: passkeys, checked Oct 22, 2026). Schwab's passkey page doesn't say whether passkeys are available to participants in workplace retirement plans administered by Schwab Retirement Plan Services.
- Does Schwab support YubiKey? Schwab doesn't name YubiKey or any brand. The same page says you can sign in with a passkey using "a security key hardware device," and that "a passkey saved on a security key stays on that key" (Schwab: passkeys, checked Oct 22, 2026).
- Does Schwab have a money transfer lock? Not documented. We did not find a self-service lock on transfers out of your account in Schwab's public pages. Schwab does let you add a verbal password to each account for phone calls (Schwab: security tips, checked Oct 22, 2026).
- What is the Schwab Security Guarantee? Schwab says it "will cover losses in any of your Schwab accounts due to unauthorized activity." To be covered, you must safeguard your login details, review your statements on time and report unauthorized transactions as quickly as possible (Schwab: Security Guarantee, checked Oct 22, 2026).

How to turn it on
We list a step only where Schwab's own page gives it (checked Oct 22, 2026).
- Passkey (on your device or a security key), from Schwab: passkeys:
- Select "Set Up a Passkey" on the login page.
- Log in with your login ID and password, and complete any verifications, if necessary.
- Select "Add Passkey" and follow the on-screen prompts to finish the setup.
- Schwab app verification, from Schwab's how-to video Schwab: two-step verification with the Schwab app (2022; Schwab's menus may have changed since):
- Make sure you've downloaded the Schwab Mobile app and have logged in at least once.
- On schwab.com, roll over "Profile" and click "Security Settings."
- In the "Two-step Verification" section, choose "Always at login" and then "Schwab app."
- Each time you log in after that, you'll get a notification to verify your identity through your mobile device.
- Verbal password: Schwab's security tips page encourages you to add one to each account, but it doesn't give setup steps. Ask Schwab when you call.
- Physical token: Schwab's token help page explains how to use a token, but it doesn't explain how to get one.
What the statuses mean
- Offered: Schwab's own documentation describes the feature.
- Not offered: Schwab's documentation says it isn't available, or lists its options in a way that clearly leaves it out. For "Text message the only option?", Not offered means Schwab documents at least one alternative to text messages.
- Not documented: we could not find the feature in Schwab's public materials. It may still exist.
Features change, so check with Schwab before relying on any detail. This page is general education, not financial advice.
