Free vs paid
- "No cost for qualifying institutions". It is included in all Google Workspace for Education editions.
- Google AI Pro for Education: "$20.00 per user/month, one year commitment or $24.00 per user/month when billed monthly". The page also shows "$15.00*", a 25% discount for Education Plus customers buying 50 to 999 licenses.
Privacy
- Training: "Data is not human reviewed or used to train AI models".
- Students and minimum age: "available to users of all ages", with a different experience for users under 18, controlled by the school's admin.
- DPA: ask whether your district's Workspace for Education agreement covers this.
- SDPC: registry not checked (member login required); vendor statement only.
Time saved
Vendor claim: "Teachers in Northern Ireland are saving up to 10 hours per week with Gemini." This is Google's claim, not independent research.
Before you use it with students: check that it is on your district's approved list and that the district has signed a data agreement. See the hub page, Which AI Tool for Which Task, for the FERPA and COPPA basics.
