Teacher Talk with MystrS: Microsoft Copilot in Education
Checked October 25, 2026 (Pacific time). Tags: Cyber, AI. No vendor money and no affiliate links.
Best for: lesson planning, quizzes, rubrics, reading-level changes (the "Teach" module), parent emails.
Free vs paid
- Copilot Chat: no additional cost with Microsoft 365 A1, A3 or A5.
- Microsoft 365 Copilot academic offering: "$18 (USD) per user per month". Microsoft's footnote says that price is "accurate as of October 2025".
Privacy
- Training: "never used to train foundation models".
- Students and minimum age: Microsoft gives two statements, and we follow the stricter one. The Copilot in education page says Copilot Chat is available to "faculty, staff, and higher education students aged 13 and older". Microsoft Learn says K-12 students under 13 are blocked and ages 13 to 17 stay off until an admin sets the age group. For K-12, treat it as a teacher tool unless your IT team has turned it on for students.
- DPA: ask whether your district's Microsoft agreement covers this.
- SDPC: registry not checked (member login required); vendor statement only.
Time saved
Not measured. The page's stat that "36% of educators report using AI daily for school" is a vendor statistic about usage, not time.
Before you use it with students: check that it is on your district's approved list and that the district has signed a data agreement. See the hub page, Which AI Tool for Which Task, for the FERPA and COPPA basics.
