Teacher Talk with MystrS: Unit 1, Your Money Plan
Teacher Talk with MystrS. Checked October 27, 2026 (Pacific time). Tags: Teacher Talk, Finance, Unit 1, Budgeting, Money Basics, High School, MystrS
Six classroom days on budgeting and money basics for high school. Students practice needs versus wants, read a paycheck, build a simple budget for a fictional persona, track spending, name an emergency fund and a save ahead habit, and spot common money traps and scams. Every activity stays educational. No personalized advice. Budgets use fictional personas so students never bring in family finances (FERPA and COPPA).
This unit pairs with the Finance desk articles and with the family Table Talks (10 minutes) under Teach it this week. It also ties into the state personal finance graduation map at /finance/states-that-require-personal-finance/, which lists where personal finance is required for high school graduation.

How the unit fits
Days build in order. Day 1 sets the choice language (needs, wants, and opportunity cost). Day 2 shows why the take home number on a paycheck is smaller than the gross number. Day 3 turns that take home number into a simple monthly budget for a fictional persona. Day 4 practices recording spending so the budget can be adjusted. Day 5 names two habits that protect the plan: an emergency fund for surprises, and saving ahead for costs you can see coming. Day 6 closes with scam and trap signs so students protect the money they just planned.
Use shared devices, a printed handout, or both. Every day includes a no device option. Supports for English learners and students with IEPs sit in each lesson's Materials list (short word banks, sentence frames, and partner options).
Standards
Aligned to the 2021 National Standards for Personal Financial Education (Jump$tart Coalition and Council for Economic Education). Day by day codes are on each lesson. Main standards for the unit: Spending 12-1, Spending 12-2, Spending 12-9, Earning Income 12-7c, Earning Income 12-9a (partial), Saving 8-1, Saving 12-9d, Spending 12-8c, and Managing Risk 12-11a.
