Unit 1, Day 5: Show Your Process
Lesson 5 of 6 in Unit 1, Use It, Check It, Own It
- School-year day
- Day 5 of 180
- Time
- 20-minute core + 30-minute extension (50 minutes in all)
Teacher Talk with MystrS. Checked October 25, 2026 (Pacific time). Tags: Cyber, AI.
Goal: Students will be able to:
- Explain why AI detectors can be wrong, including about writing done by people.
- Keep simple evidence of their own process: notes, drafts, version history.
- State the class rule for disclosing AI use.
Materials:
- Projector
- Two detector facts: When OpenAI tried to build its own AI detector, it labeled human-written text like Shakespeare and the Declaration of Independence as AI-generated, and Turnitin says its AI writing detection 'should not be used as the sole basis for adverse actions against a student.' (OpenAI educator article; Turnitin guide)
- A one-page process log template with four columns: date, what I did, tool used, what I changed
Core (20 min)
- Ask: "If a computer said you cheated and you didn't, how would you prove it?" (3 min)
- Share the detector facts. The point is not that detectors are useless. It is that your process is your proof. (7 min)
- As a class, agree on one sentence to add when you used AI, for example "I used AI to quiz me on chapter 3." (7 min)
- Check for understanding. (3 min)
Extension (up to 30 min)
- Students start a process log for a current assignment and write two entries. (20 min)
- Partners trade logs and ask one question each. (10 min)
Check for understanding: "List two things you could show a teacher to prove a piece of writing is yours."
Standards (from our standards map):
- CSTA 2026: HS-ALG-PS-05; HS-SOC-HU-43
