Goal: Students will be able to:
- Apply the postcard rule: if you would not write it on a postcard, do not type it into a chatbot.
- Sort details into three groups: fine to share, change the details first, never share.
- Find where a chatbot keeps its data and history settings.
Materials:
- Projector
- Sorting cards with sample details: a first name, a home address, a grade, a password, a medical detail, a school name, a photo
- A screenshot of one chatbot's data controls page (the existing lesson links OpenAI's and Google's)
Core (20 min)
- Hold up a postcard. Ask who can read it on its way to the mailbox. (3 min)
- Groups sort the cards into three piles: fine, change details, never. (10 min)
- Go over the cards the groups disagreed on. (4 min)
- Check for understanding. (3 min)
Extension (up to 30 min)
- Groups take one "change details" card and rewrite a prompt so it still gets help without the private part. (15 min)
- Screenshot tour of where chat history and training settings live. No student accounts are needed. (15 min)
Check for understanding: "Rewrite this prompt so it is safe to send: 'My name is Jordan Lee, I go to Lincoln Middle, and I'm failing math. Help me.'"
