Teacher Talk with MystrS: Unit 1, Use It, Check It, Own It

Scott Sandberg is a current classroom teacher of Personal Finance, AI, Cyber and Engineering, and trains teachers in computer science and cyber through PLTW (Project Lead The Way).

Why this unit

A lot of AI training for teachers comes from people who are not in a classroom every day. This unit was built from the classroom out. Each day is an activity that fits a real period, runs on a projector, and does not need student accounts. Common Sense Education already covers AI literacy in depth. This is the practical version: short activities that teach students to use AI well and that save you prep, because every day follows the same shape.

Unit at a glance

Unit goals: By the end of Unit 1, students will be able to:

Our rule of thumb: the teacher drives the AI on the projector and the students do the thinking on paper.

Where Unit 1 sits in the year

The long-term plan is a full year of 180 days of classroom activities, organized into units. Unit 1 comes first because every later unit uses its habits: ask clearly, check the answer, protect private information, and be honest about AI use.

Possible next units (topic ideas only, not yet written or scheduled):

Before you start: age limits and accounts

ToolWhat the vendor saysFor this unit
ChatGPT (consumer)At least 13, and "If you are under 18 you must have your parent or legal guardian's permission." (OpenAI Terms of Use)Teacher demo only, unless your district approves and you have consent.
ChatGPT for Teachers"This plan is not for students." (see our ChatGPT for Teachers tool page)Teacher screen only.
Microsoft Copilot ChatThe stricter statement applies. Microsoft's product page lists Copilot Chat for "faculty, staff, and higher education students aged 13 and older" (Copilot in education). Microsoft Learn says K-12 students under 13 are blocked and ages 13 to 17 stay off until an admin sets the age group (Microsoft Learn).Treat it as a teacher tool unless your IT team has turned it on for students.
Gemini for Education"available to users of all ages", with a different experience for users under 18 (Google for Education)Depends on your admin's settings. Ask first.
Khanmigo (students)Student access is through a Khan Academy Districts partnership, homeschool, or being over 18 (Khan Academy Help Center)Not a walk-in option for most classrooms.

Our rule of thumb: if you have to ask whether students may sign up, the answer for this unit is no. Demo it instead.
